A drilling rig isn't a single 'load'. In transport terms it becomes 8–14 units of different mass and geometry. Below is how we scope a project of that kind from the customer's drawing to the pad installation.
Cargo decomposition
The first thing the oversize engineer does is break the rig specification into transport units and see which ones pass in weight and size without a permit and which ones require approvals.
- Mast: long-load up to 40 m — a long-wheelbase lowboy or sectional breakdown.
- Substructure: peak mass and low clearance — a heavy lowboy.
- Drilling rotor and travelling-block assemblies: standard lowboy with rigid fixing.
- Mud and fuel tanks: standard trailers, lashing straps.
- Power unit (diesel-genset): standard or low-deck lowboy by mass.
- Compressor, water-treatment unit, auxiliary equipment.
Lowboy selection
Mast
The mast is the most complex element. We either run a platform lowboy with a cantilever beam, or we break the mast into pre-approved sections. The second option lets us prepare rigging at the pad and saves 2–4 days at the site.
Substructure
The substructure needs a heavy lowboy with an extendable deck and ramps for self-propelled loading. We monitor axle loads — the limit across most Irkutsk Oblast corridors is 9 t per axle.
Tanks and auxiliary
Standard trailers or low-deck lowboys. The key is the lashing scheme and anti-roll straps, especially on grades and tight turns on oilfield roads.
Route approvals
Every oversize unit gets its own special permit via Rosavtodor's system. Typical window in Irkutsk Oblast — 7–14 days, in Yakutia up to 21 days. In parallel we request bridge and overpass owner consents — the most common stall point.
Escort and placement
- An escort vehicle for every oversize unit.
- Crew comms — two radios plus a satellite phone per group.
- Site work: unloading, placement on the foundation, assembly where required.
- Final transfer-acceptance act with photo records for every unit.

Cycle from approval to placement
«A rig run isn't a transport job. It's one big assembly task where the logistician works side by side with the customer's lead mechanic.»
— Oversize engineer
What cuts risk
Three things: an early technical dialogue with the customer (drawing before the quote), a lowboy reserve for the peak season and a single engineer-logistician who owns the project through to sign-off. If you have a rig move coming up in Irkutsk Oblast or Yakutia — reach out at the planning stage, we'll scope the project and build the estimate.
