The Lena ice crossing is the bottleneck on the Ust-Kut → Lensk leg. Its opening and closing define the entire January–March window for northern supply. Below is how the 2024/25 season is shaped and why we plan runs by the actual ice state, not the calendar.
Season rhythm
The crossing opens by a regional road-authority call, not by calendar. First — passenger vehicles, then a phased increase in allowable mass as the ice thickens. In normal years the full cycle runs about 90 days.
- Passenger vehicles — typically at ≈ 30 cm ice thickness.
- Up to 10 t — around 55 cm.
- Up to 20 t — around 75 cm.
- Peak (30+ t) — second half of February with sustained frost.
- Closing — late March to early April as the ice degrades.
Mass limits
Limits move week by week. Information comes through the regional road services and our own dispatcher network along the corridor. We always run 10–15% below the stated daily limit — a buffer against hidden washouts and temperature swings.
Night closures
During the warming phase (late March) the crossing closes at night — the ice 'works', safer to keep it static. We shift runs to daytime and extend the schedule buffer.
Before the opening
- Consolidate shipments at the Ust-Kut base for the northern runs.
- Time the maintenance schedule so maximum fleet is ready for opening.
- Brief crews on current limits and alternative routes.
- Contract-side backup schemes in case of seasonal-window misses.
After the closing
When the crossing is closed and the summer ferry isn't running yet (typically April–May), urgent cargo goes by helicopter and bulk volume waits for river navigation. In this window we usually work southern legs or run scheduled fleet maintenance.

Buffer we write into the contract
«The ice doesn't read your contract. So you plan the cargo first, then look at the ice — and adjust the plan. That's what we teach every logistician from day one.»
— Yakutia corridor dispatcher
What this means for you
If your project hinges on Lensk or Mirny, plan logistics against two real dates: the crossing's actual opening and the actual clearance for your mass class. We help build that schedule and lock it in the contract.
