Every autumn our shop in Ust-Kut shifts into "winter cadence". This is the internal checklist we run on every unit that will head into an ice road or a Yakutia run.
Engine & fuel system
- Swap oil to arctic viscosity, replace filter.
- Injection pump: cycle test, plunger wear inspection.
- Injectors on the bench, glow plugs replaced if needed.
- Switch to winter-grade diesel, drain the sump.
Electrical & starting
- Both batteries through a capacity test — minimum 80% rated.
- Pre-heater: shop run, channel blow-through, nozzle check.
- Relays, wiring around starter and alternator — corrosion check.
- Backup — jump unit carried on the escort truck.
Pneumatic system
- Air-system antifreeze, dryer check, filter swap.
- All hoses inspected, replaced if cracked.
- Diaphragms and cuffs of spring brake actuators — piece-by-piece check.
Tyres, chains, rigging
- R22.5 winter tyres — tread depth, studs, balancing.
- Chain set per truck + lock inspection.
- Lashing straps, rigging, load labelling.
Final — shakedown run
After winter prep every truck takes a short shakedown (30–50 km) with a full systems check. Only then does it go out on a long run. This cuts unscheduled dropouts roughly threefold across the season.
